Key Points

  • Permanent placements rise to greatest extent since May
  • Labour supply continues to decline
  • Permanent starting salary inflation remains weakest among UK regions

Staff Appointments

Permanent placements growth accelerates
The amount of candidates placed into permanent positions
in the capital increased to the greatest extent in six months
midway through the fourth quarter. Moreover, the rate of
increase was above the long-run series average and slightly
quicker than that seen for the UK as a whole.

Contract billings rise sharply
November data signalled a further rise in temporary billings
received by London recruitment consultants, the sixteenth in as
many months. The rate of expansion accelerated to its sharpest
for three months, but remained below the UK average.

Staff Availability

Permanent candidate supply drops
The number of candidates available for permanent positions in London dropped again in November, thereby extending the current period of decline to four-and-a-half years. The rate of deterioration, however, was the weakest since January and softer than that seen across the UK as a whole.

Contract candidate numbers falls at faster rate
The availability of candidates for contract positions in the capital fell for the fifty-second successive month during November. Moreover, the rate of decrease was the most marked since December 2015 was the sharpest seen of all five monitored UK regions.

Remuneration

Permanent salaries
Salaries awarded to permanent starters in the capital increased in the latest survey period, thereby continuing a trend that has been evident since June 2013. The rate of inflation strengthened to a three-month high but remained the weakest seen of all five monitored UK regions.

Contract pay rates
Average hourly wages given to  contract staff also rose during November, and stretched the current period of increase to 14 months. Although easing from the prior survey period, the rate of inflation remained sharper than the UK average, albeit only marginally.
