Langley James IT Recruitment Market Review – November: London

Key points

  • Growth in permanent placements and vacancies slowest since June 2013
  • Permanent salary inflation ticks up, but upturn in contract pay moderates
  • Acceleration in permanent candidate numbers

Permanent placements rise at slower rate

The number of staff placed in permanent work by London-based consultancies increased in November, extending the current sequence of growth to 18 months. However, the degree to which permanent appointments increased was the least marked since June 2013. Slower rise in contract billings

Further solid increase in contract billings

November’s survey showed a further rise in billings received from the employment of contractorary staff at consultancies in London, with the rate of growth solid and slightly faster than in the month before. For the fourth straight month, however, the increase in contract billings in the capital was less marked than the UK average.

Staff Availability
Sharp reduction in permanent candidate supply

Consultancies operating in London recorded a further steep decrease in the availability of candidates for permanent vacancies. Having accelerated for the second successive month, the rate of decline was the fastest since August and among the sharpest on record.

Slower, but still marked, decrease in contract candidate numbers
Contract candidate availability worsened again in November, in line with the trend since August 2013. Although notably slower than in the preceding survey period, the rate of decline in temporary candidate numbers remained sharp overall and faster than the UK average.

Remuneration
Permanent salaries
Permanent salary inflation in London reaccelerated slightly in November, after having eased to a 12-month low in October. That said, the rate of increase remained slightly slower than at the UK level, as has been the case every month since July.

Contract pay rates
London also saw slower inflation in contract wages rates than the UK as a whole. While permanent salaries in the capital increased at a faster pace, the rate of growth in hourly pay for contract staff eased further from September’s recent high, reaching the slowest since March.
